Onion Raita
Onion Raita has onion and curd (plain yogurt) are the base ingredients along with green chilli, coriander leaves, and some spices. This quick and easy accompaniment doesn’t need any cooking and can be ready within 5-6 minutes. When it is served with vegetable biryani or pulao it makes a perfect meal combo for lunch and dinner.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Red Onion, finely chopped or thinly sliced
1 cup Plain Curd (yogurt/dahi) (250 ml)
1/2 Green Chilli, finely chopped
1-2 tablespoons Coriander Leaves
A pinch of Black Pepper Powder, optional
1/4 teaspoon Black Salt (kala namak), optional
1/4 teaspoon Roasted Cumin Powder or Cumin-Coriander Powder, optional
Salt, to taste
Directions:
  1. Finely chop or thinly slice the onion.
  2. Take 1 cup Plain Curd (yogurt/dahi in a medium bowl.
  3. Whisk it using a hand whisker until smooth and creamy.
  4. Add 1/2 cup finely chopped or thinly sliced red onion, finely chopped 1/2 green chilli, 1-2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander leaves, a pinch of black pepper powder, 1/4 teaspoon black salt (kala namak), 1/4 teaspoon roasted cumin powder or cumin-coriander powder and salt to taste.
  5. Mix well. Onion Raita is ready for serving. Serve it with vegetable pulao or aloo paratha in lunch.
Tips and Variations:
  • You can make this raita with only 4 ingredients also (onion, curd, coriander leaves and salt).
  • Add 5-6 finely chopped mint leaves for variation.
  • Use full-fat plain curd and make sure the curd is not sour.
Taste: Salty
Serving Ideas: Onion raita can be served with any type of paratha or biryani or as an accompaniment with a meal in lunch.
