Basic Martini Recipe

All current generations of martinis are far from what original martinis were used to be. The basic martini, in its authentic recipe, is prepared by stirring gin and dry vermouth. However there is one more version that uses vodka instead of gin and requires shaking. This martini with vodka is kind of more widely preferred. Gin or vodka, shaken or stirred; find out what works best for you with this recipe.

Basic Martini

Preparation Time: 2 minutes
Serves: 1 serving
Glassware: Cocktail Glass
Basic Gin Martini Ingredients
50 ml (1 2/3 oz) Gin
10 ml (1/3 oz) Dry Vermouth
3 Green Olives
Ice Cubes
Basic Vodka Martini Ingredients
50 ml (1 2/3 oz) Vodka
10 ml (1/3 oz) Dry Vermouth
3 Green Olives
Ice Cubes

Directions:

There are two ways in which basic martini (Gin or Vodka) can be prepared. Shaken and Stirred.

Shaken Martini:

  1. Take gin or vodka and dry vermouth in ice filled cocktail shaker. Shake it thoroughly until it is frosted from outside.
  2. Take chilled martini glass, add skewered olives in it.
  3. Strain and pour prepared mixed drink in glass and serve.

Stirred Martini:

  1. Take chilled martini glass, add dry vermouth in it.
  2. Gently swirl the glass so that dry vermouth coats inner surface of the glass.
  3. Discard the dry vermouth (optional)
  4. Pour gin or vodka in glass and stir gently.
  5. Drop skewered olives in it and serve.
Tips and Variations:

  • Shaking of gin in cocktail shaker with dry vermouth will bruise the taste of gin. i.e. it will make it little bit bitter which many people like it. However, shaking will not bruise the vodka, it will retain its taste even after shaking.
  • Shaking with ice forces melting water to mix with vodka or gin diluting the alcohol.
  • Make sure that serving glass is chilled. It is also recommended to chill all alcohols before making martini.
  • Use premium quality vodka and gin so that there is no taste of impurities in resultant cocktail.
